Evidence-Based Education For Indiana Policy Makers
Alcoholism and Drug Dependence

Janice Froelich, Ph.D.

Dr. Froehlich divides her time between research and teaching. As director of an Alcohol Research Laboratory her research program involves studies in both humans and animals. Her human studies focus on the identification of hormonal responses to alcohol that help identify individuals at high risk for the future development of alcoholism. Her animal studies focus on the role of morphine-like chemicals that the brain makes and uses as signals involved in rewarding certain behaviors. Her research team is currently characterizing how these signals act to increase alcohol drinking and how chemicals that block the action of these peptides could be used to treat alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

Dr. Froehlich is a recognized expert in the area of brain opioid peptides and alcohol drinking behavior. She serves on the review board of national research journals and national grant panels on alcoholism and is a noted speaker both in the United States and abroad.
